Rough diamond demand growth to hit record this year – DeBeers
Diamond producer De Beers expects global demand growth for rough diamonds to set a new record this year on the exceptionally strong performance of its key US market and robust demand in China and India, the head of the company's distribution arm said. Despite global volatility and concerns that the global economy is sliding towards another financial crisis, demand for diamonds was unlikely to be badly impacted because of its safe-haven appeal, Diamond Trading Co (DTC) Chief Executive Varda Shine told Reuters in an interview on Monday. Gem Diamonds sees record prices in H1
London-listed Gem Diamonds said on Monday that it had received record prices for rough diamonds in the first half of 2011, driven by strong supply-demand fundamentals. CEO Clifford Elphick said that supply-demand fundamentals for rough diamonds looked ever better. “Increasing consumption of diamond jewellery in the US, China and India, the lack of significant new mines coming on stream and very low stocks of rough and polished diamonds in the cutting centres is being reflected in strongly rising prices of both rough and polished diamonds.” Full Article

Key US market drags its feet as China, India lead diamond recovery
If diamonds are a girl's best friend, Chinese girls are certainly a diamond producer’s best friend. Miners eye sea as land resources diminish
The diminishing nature of some land-based mineral resources (the resource determines where you mine and whether you mine – not a nongovernmental organisation focus which is, in fact, a welcome interest) has increased the importance of marine mining and has reignited the interest of mining houses in this new frontier. Although Southern Africa has a relatively long history of marine mining, the focus was mostly on land-based natural resources during the commodity boom as the emphasis was placed on large volumes when weighed against the cost of mining.
