Petra sells 507-ct diamond for record $35m
The 507,5 ct Cullinan Heritage diamond has been sold for a record $35,3-million, the highest sale price ever recorded for a rough diamond. JSE-and LSE-listed Petra Diamonds on Friday reported that it had sold the diamond, at a tender held in South Africa, to the Chow Tai Fook Jewellery company of Hong Kong. Full Article

Rockwell achieves higher prices in mid-November sale
JSE- and TSX-listed Rockwell Diamonds achieved an average price of $1 434/ct in the diamond sale concluded in mid-November, representing an increase of about 20% over the average price achieved in the latter part of July.

Diamond demand outstripping supply – Oppenheimer
Demand for diamonds was "most probably" outstripping supply and, as a diamond producer, De Beers was wanting to produce "as many diamonds as possible", De Beers chairperson Nicky Oppenheimer said on Tuesday. Oppenheimer, speaking on CNN to Fareed Zakaria, said that the Chinese and Indian people were showing a "tremendous desire" to own diamonds and that the two countries would be "tremendously important" diamond markets in the future. JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Aim-listed alluvial diamond-miner Namibian Resources has, through its subsidiary, Sonnberg Diamonds, entered into an exclusive three-month option agreement to acquire an offshore diamond-recovery ship for N$13-million, or £1,1-million.
The diamond-miner noted in a statement on Thursday that Sonnberg planned to establish a marine diamond-mining division to complement its onshore operations.

Miners eye sea as land resources diminish
The diminishing nature of some land-based mineral resources (the resource determines where you mine and whether you mine – not a nongovernmental organisation focus which is, in fact, a welcome interest) has increased the importance of marine mining and has reignited the interest of mining houses in this new frontier. Although Southern Africa has a relatively long history of marine mining, the focus was mostly on land-based natural resources during the commodity boom as the emphasis was placed on large volumes when weighed against the cost of mining. AngloGold forms marine mining JV with De Beers

JSE-listed gold-miner AngloGold Ashanti and diamond giant De Beers have formed a joint venture (JV) to explore for gold and other minerals in the ocean, the two companies announced on Monday. The JV would initially focus on exploration, but would ultimately mine marine deposits on the continental shelf. Full Article

Brazil wants African allies in seabed mining quest
Brazil is trying to forge an alliance with African and South American countries to defend seabed mining rights and strategic shipping lanes in the South Atlantic, its defense minister said this week. Brazil is concerned it could fall behind as leading developed countries race to divvy up the rights to mineral and maritime resources in international waters. Potentially huge deposits of manganese, copper, cobalt and other minerals are at stake, with the seabed in international waters covering more than 50% of the world's surface.
